Demon Speeding?
Updated: Jul 4, 2022
As many of you know,
I love talking Cars. Motors. Rides. Whips.
Whatever you call wanna call em.
And… I really like using motoring metaphors, driving analogies and tales of travelling to help clients understand the nature of thought and how it affects their lives.
Even if you don’t drive, I want you to play along here and imagine you have your dream car.
What is it?
Ok, let’s pretend that your shiny new super car is your Mind.
Try and calibrate how fast your car (mind) is going?
What is the speed of your thinking right now?
What does your speedometer say?
I’ve used this analogy countless times with clients and their answers range from 15mph to a staggering 170mph!
If the mind is operating at 100-150 mph:
Their thoughts will be literally RACING!
They're so busy with no time to take care of their health.
They constantly feel like they need breaks, holidays, rest-stops because they're knackered all the time!
They may resort to booze, smoking, drugs, gambling and behaviours of all sorts to try and balance themselves out.
Then there are folks who are at their top speed.
Flat out.
Redlining.
No reaction time.
They’re heading for burnout or a breakdown.
The engine warning lights are on.
Tyres smoking.
If they hit the brakes at that speed...well…
Whether they’re driving a Porsche or a Peugeot…Doesn’t matter…they’ll be struggling to hold it together and keep it on the road.
Their car is shaking and snaking all over the road.
Just living in a horrible feeling 24/7.
I teach my clients that just because their minds CAN do 100+mph…
...just because our cars (minds) are capable of 170mph,
...doesn’t mean we should drive that fast! (illegal on UK roads anyway unfortunately haha!)
It’s just not sustainable.
It has all sorts of negative impacts on our mental and physical health.
When we take your foot off the throttle and learn to relax, our thoughts will start to settle.
We have clearer communication with others.
We have more mental capacity.
We have more clarity.
More confidence in our abilities.
Be able to take charge.
We won’t need the booze, drugs or as many "rest breaks" anymore.
What if our minds could just cruise at 30mph?
How would that feel? What would that be like?
Lovely right?!
The fuel in our minds and bodies would be consumed at a lower rate.
We'd enjoy the view and be in the moment more.
Feel nice and relaxed. Chilled.
We'd be able to slow to a stop safely.
Our reaction times would be improved.
We can drive and drive and drive on and on. Not getting tired. Not needing to pull over to rest so often.
For the sake of ourselves and our "passengers!" (our families, friends, colleagues) , it’s important for all of us to try and get that thinking speed down for a calmer ride that we can actually enjoy.
Drive Safe.
Jimmy.
P.S If you know someone who doesn't want to tolerate a busy mind, tons of overthinking, and racing thoughts any more. Someone who wants to put the speed limiter on and would like to be taken on a nicer drive as one of my passengers…
...then tell them to get in touch today and I’ll teach them something that will slow them down!
