Overcoming OVERTHINKING!
Updated: Jul 4, 2022
We’ve all been there…
When we’re doing so much thinking it causes us to:
Become brain-foggy and forgetful (and even completely detached from the present moment!)
Feel paralysed by indecision which frustrates us... (and potentially, others.)
Start making mistakes (small ones first then bigger ones!)
It’s a living nightmare (or day-mare) that robs people of the present moment, leads them to not be able to make decisions, solve problems and stops them living life to the full.
When we get so up in our own heads, all of our thoughts feel real. We only feel our thinking and the barrage of constant thinking takes it’s toll!
There are a lot of ways to overcome overthinking. One that I’ve found that has the most bang for our buck is…
Taking Action.
Inactivity, in and of itself, is what causes even more fear and allows the self-doubt to linger a lot longer than it otherwise would.
See, all negative emotions and states of mind are, unfortunately, addictive!
Too much overthinking becomes like a disease and, if not dealt with can lead to:
Anxiety, depression, stress.
Unhelpful coping strategies (e.g booze or drugs)
Lack of sleep... (which massively affects ALL areas of our general wellbeing)
Relationship breakdowns. (Partners, work colleagues, friends, family)
And, of course…MORE overthinking! Arrgh!
5 simple actions we can take:
Quick and easy to implement action antidotes include:
Get up, move. This is one way of “breaking state” as it’s called in NLP. Simply go to a different location or better still, go for a walk (in nature is best)
Breathe. Slow, deliberate and deep breathing reduces anxious states of mind and takes just a few seconds. Box breathing (see video below) is a good shout!
Get it out or get it down. Either saying out loud to yourself, someone else or writing down what’s going on brings awareness to it and can help us get clarity immediately. I’ve done this before and realised just how silly some of the stuff I was worrying about actually was! Don’t suffer in silence.
One way or the other, MAKE A DECISION. Is it actually a life or death decision…no… it never is, it just FEELS like it is… Just decide. Ask yourself: “What is the worst that can happen?!”
Do things that require some brain power. Read, play a game, train your brain, exercise, learn a language, play an instrument…Anything! Distractions like sitting in front of the TV, mindlessly scrolling social media…don’t count. If we use the mind for a practical purpose now and it’ll reward us immediately (and later on in life too!)
There’s a lot more to talk about on the topic of overthinking but ,for today, I wanted to put some practical tips out there for anyone that needs it right now.
Finally, I’ll leave you with 3 of my favourite quotes about overthinking from men who are way more clever-er than me!
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer the negative elements in your life, don’t sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy!” Dale Carnegie,
“To think too much is a disease” Fydor Dostoyevsky
“Man is not worried by real problems so much as his imagined anxieties about problems.” Epictetus
Have a great week

P.S Change is a process. Transformation takes time.
But we can all 100% shift from where we’re stuck!
If we apply the information we learn, we can get insight.
An insight can be life-changing!
If we don’t take action and apply the information, it stays as information…or a nice idea.
One such person who took action recently worked with me is a guy….called Guy!
"I've had a sponsored mindset coaching session with Jimmy Kane through B2B and I can't speak highly enough about it. Jimmy opened my eyes a little bit and gave me the space to open up and receive honest feedback and encouraged me to look at myself in a kinder way.
He's kept in touch too as well as Steve, which provides me with a support network."
Boom!
